For many centuries, the genre of oral folk art, such as proverbs and sayings, has formed a kind of encyclopedia of wisdom, reflecting centuries of human experience in every sphere of life and activity — from everyday life to philosophy and psychology, from medicine to morality.

For many millennia, people preserved and passed on their life experiences to others solely orally, from person to person, from generation to generation. Since before the advent of writing, folk wisdom — which is precisely what is encapsulated in proverbs and sayings — lived only in people's memories, hence one had to rely solely on memory. This explains the vividness of images, comparisons, and metaphors in proverbs and sayings.
