The Wizard of the Emerald City

In 1936, Alexander Melentievich Volkov noticed the work of American writer Frank Baum titled «The Wizard of Oz». After the author’s adaptation, this fairy tale transformed into the now-famous novella «The Wizard of the Emerald City», the first version of... which, more closely aligned with Baum's original tale, was published in 1939.  Besides «The Wizard», the final edition of which appeared in 1959, Volkov had many other works for children and adults, yet it was precisely the series of books about the adventures of Ellie and her friends that made him one of the most read children's writers in Russia.
The first version of «The Wizard of the Emerald City» in this edition is adorned with illustrations by N. E. Radlov. The illustrations for the adapted text of «The Wizard of the Emerald City» were created by V. A. Chizikov.
