The Book of Sacred Scripture, the Psalter — a collection of poetic prayers — was translated from ancient Hebrew into Greek in the 3rd century BC, and in the 9th century the Slavic enlighteners Cyril and Methodius translated it literally... into Slavic. The Psalms and excerpts from them constitute a significant part of the Church's worship. The modern Orthodox Church Slavonic text of the Psalter is not fully understood; the Synodal translation of the Bible into Russian, made from ancient Hebrew and significantly different, does not facilitate understanding either. This Russian translation of the Psalter was made from the Greek original by the authoritative translator of liturgical texts, Hieromonk Amvrosiy (Timrot).
