«The War of the Worlds» by H.G. Wells is one of the first novels written in the science fiction genre, repeatedly adapted for film and staged, including on the radio. In the 1930s, radio receivers were in every American home,... so it is no surprise that the nation learned about the disaster that had befallen it through radio news. On a Sunday evening, Americans tuned in to CBS. From the reports, it could be concluded that something terrible was happening on the east coast. The announcer calmly reported the landing of Martians. Panic ensued in the city, while director Orson Welles and the actors of his «Mercury Theatre» were unaware of what was happening outside. They did not intend to scare anyone, but listeners believed that Martians had indeed attacked America. We present to readers the unadapted text of the novel, accompanied by comments and a glossary.
