«The War of the Worlds» by H.G. Wells is one of the first novels written in the genre of science fiction, repeatedly adapted and staged, including on the radio. In the 1930s, the radio was present in every American home,... so it is not surprising that the nation learned about the disaster that had befallen it through radio news. On Sunday evening, Americans tuned into CBS. From the reports, it could be concluded that something terrible was happening on the East Coast. The announcer calmly reported the landing of Martians. Panic broke out in the city, while director Orson Welles and the actors of his «Mercury Theatre» were unaware of what was happening outside. They did not intend to scare anyone, but listeners believed that Martians had indeed attacked America. We present to the readers the unadapted text of the novel, accompanied by comments and a glossary.
