Kate Douglas Wiggin (1859-1923) is an American writer, known for her novels, the most famous of which is "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm," written in 1903. The book was enthusiastically received by readers and critics, translated into foreign languages, and became...
the basis for a theatrical production that also achieved great success. Clubs named after Kate Wiggin were established in American schools, where the writer read excerpts from her works; in recognition, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature degree. The story is published in a wonderful translation by Marina Batysheva with illustrations by contemporary artist Anna Petrova, created specifically for this edition.
Rebecca was born on a farm in a large and very poor family. She was raised by her mother's older sisters. Rebecca was a kind and capable girl, but her absent-mindedness and thoughtless actions horrified Aunt Miranda. Enthralled by composing poetry, she got her dress stained with paint; when neighborhood children decided to sell soap to buy a lamp, she eagerly helped them and became famous throughout the area; she invited a family of missionaries into her aunts' house without asking... But people saw Rebecca's kindness and responsiveness and loved her, and eventually even Aunt Miranda had to admit that she had grown into a good person.
