Voices of Silence

André Malraux – a French writer, prominent political and cultural figure, thinker, who significantly influenced the works of Albert Camus, but above all – one of the greatest European cultural theorists and art historians of the 20th century, whose comprehensive work Voices of Silence is considered an enduringly relevant, classic, and timeless piece simultaneously in art history, painting aesthetics, and philosophy of art. This is a book where the now-popular term ‘imaginary museum’ first emerged in the field of world art history – that is, a collection of works of art, the images of which are forever preserved in our memory. Moreover, this work contains the author’s original theory on the all-encompassing influence of ancient art on world art, examines the role of copying in the creative biographies of great masters, pays considerable attention to children's and naïve art, and presents Malraux's concept of the nature of creativity as the artist's conquest of truth through exclusively stylistic forms.
