Starting to write the story "Taras Bulba," Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809–1852) studied everything that could help him portray the Cossack world — from historical chronicles to folk songs. Probably, this is why when reading the work, one does not doubt... that the author presents an objective, impartial picture of history.
The story describes one of the numerous wars of the Zaporozhian Cossacks with the Polish nobility that took place in the 15th-17th centuries. But what were they defending? Only the land and a peaceful life? No. The most important for them was the Russian Orthodox faith. And they were aided in this struggle by brotherhood, kinship, comradeship, honor, and bravery.
