"The Government Inspector" is the immortal comedy by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809–1852), a brilliant example of Russian satire.
The author himself wrote that he decided to "gather together all the evils in Russia that I knew at the time, all the... injustices that occur in those places and under those circumstances where the most is expected of a person in terms of justice, and at once to laugh at it all."
The provincial town into which the main character Khleshtakov arrives became a model of Russia.
