The book contains works of the great Russian writer Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (1818-1883): «Mumu» and selected essays from the cycle «Notes of a Hunter».
The story «Mumu» has become a sort of business card for the writer. It is based on real events that took place in his mother's house. However, it is not just a retelling of those events. Gerasim is a collective image of the Russian people, who willingly submit to a capricious petty tyrant, slavishly killing everything that is truly dear to him. But in the end, the author still instills hope in the souls of the readers...
The cycle of essays «Notes of a Hunter» is rightly considered an outstanding anti-serfdom work, which prepared the Peasant Reform of 1861. Here, the author acts as a keen observer of human morals and characters and paints an entire gallery of images from all classes of pre-reform Russia. Together, they create an objective picture of the social and everyday life of our homeland. But the most important thing is that this is a vivid portrait of the Russian national character, about which there is still endless debate both in Russia and abroad.
