Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (1890-1958) - daughter of Greek Princess Alexandra and Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich - the younger son of Alexander II, cousin of the last Russian emperor. She was brought up with her brother Dmitry in the family... of the Moscow governor-general Grand Duke Sergey Alexandrovich and his wife Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. Maria Pavlovna's brother, Dmitry Pavlovich, was one of the assassins of Rasputin. She herself was a Swedish duchess, head of the fashion house "Kitmir" in Paris, a photographer, and an artist. After fleeing Bolshevik Russia, she lived in London, Paris, America, and Argentina, passing away in 1958.
In exile, she wrote two memoirs - "In Russia" and "In Exile" (both of which make up this book), which evoked mixed reactions and much discussion among the Russian emigration community. Few members of the royal bloodline, when cast into harsh everyday life, repeatedly conceive some unconventional solution - the resilience and resourcefulness of Maria Pavlovna are truly unique.
