Mohandas Gandhi came from a rather affluent family belonging to a respected caste of merchants. After his death, a pair of sandals, glasses, and a staff were left behind. Throughout his life, Gandhi devoted himself to self-restraint and serving society, tirelessly speaking out against violence and religious strife. For his merits, he received the title Mahatma — "Great Soul." "My Life" by Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most popular autobiographies of the 20th century, a story of the life of a great sage and experienced, yet pure-hearted politician, a story of India's liberation and a tale of spiritual quest. The book also includes the treatises "My Faith" and "The Key to Health," in which Gandhi reflects on the religions that exist in the world, on vegetarianism, and on a moral way of life.
