The Past and Thoughts. Emigration

The Past and Thoughts — an autobiographical chronicle, recognized by literary scholars and historians of domestic prose as the main work of the author and one of the key literary works of the 19th century in the memoir genre. This book includes the fifth and sixth parts of The Past and Thoughts, dedicated to Herzen's life after leaving Russia — first in France, then in Italy, again in France, and finally in England, which was to become a new homeland for the author for a long time. England, where political passions flared in its capital, as political émigrés of literally all conceivable degrees of radicalism and all possible teachings and systems from many European countries were forced to settle... The memoir component is interspersed with vivid depictions of the political life of Western Europe in the turbulent mid-19th century, philosophical interludes, essays, and articles.
