Atonement

Ian McEwan is one of the authors of the "ruling triumvirate" of contemporary British prose (along with Julian Barnes and Martin Amis), a winner of the Booker Prize for the novel "Amsterdam." "Atonement" is a remarkable in its sincerity "chronicle of lost time," kept by a teenage girl who reassesses and reinterprets the events of "adult" life in her whimsical and childishly cruel way.

Having witnessed a rape, she interprets it in her own way and sets in motion a chain of fateful events, which will "echo" in the most unexpected manner many, many years later…

In 2007, a film adaptation of the same name was released (directed by Joe Wright, starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy). The film was presented at the Venice Film Festival, winning two Golden Globe Awards and one of seven Oscar nominations.
