Post-Impressionism

Post-Impressionism is a conditional collective name for the united movements in European painting of the late 19th to early 20th centuries, the founders of which are considered to be four artists who summarized the art of the 19th century and set the direction for the development of subsequent generations of artists – Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. They moved away from the immediate-sensory depiction of the surrounding world characteristic of Impressionists and attempted to convey to the viewer a profound philosophical meaning of existence. Each of these masters, despite their conditional affiliation with Post-Impressionism, worked in an exceptional manner unique to them and relentlessly sought new paths in painting. Essentially, they were united only by a very complex and tragic fate. Overall, the creativity of Post-Impressionists expressed the dominant motives and moods of their time and had a significant influence on the development of artistic culture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
