Fantastic Gustave Doré. A Unique Retrospective of the Master’s Major Works

The creative biography of the 19th-century classic Gustave Doré — engraver, illustrator, caricaturist, sculptor — with numerous exquisite reproductions that allow for a full appreciation of the artist's mastery.

From the Bible to Shakespeare, from Balzac to Milton, from Cervantes to Poe — the intricate, romantic, precise, and vivid drawings of Gustave Doré brought great works to life and were valued as much as the stories and poems they illustrated.

In selecting works, the authors were guided by the principles of chronology, theme, and aesthetics. Doré managed to cover all areas: he drew caricatures of his contemporaries, reported on military events, illustrated fables, poetry, novels, and also painted landscapes and works on allegorical themes. In Doré's work, comic caricatures coexist with majestic images, epic canvases, and contemplative views. He captured reality while virtuously handling imagination.

This book, filled with deep art historical analysis and expert commentary from historians of Western art, will be a true treasure for collectors — as grand and sensational as the master himself.
