The Girl-Wizard Retires
«The Girl-Wizard Retires» — magical realism with elements of social fantasy about a young woman who finds herself between despair, debts, and an unexpected calling. The familiar image of a girl-wizard here is stripped of its fairy-tale sparkle: magic is...
subject to rules, tied to responsibilities, and embedded in an almost working system with its discipline and limitations. The action unfolds in Seoul against the backdrop of a pandemic crisis, unstable employment, and anxiety about the future. This is a story about a world where even being chosen does not eliminate self-doubt, and saving the world coexists with questions of money, labor, and the right to decide who to be.
The twenty-nine-year-old heroine loses her job, gets mired in loans, and at the moment of complete breakdown meets Ah Roa — a girl in white, who sees in her the future strongest wizard. Instead of the usual path to heroism for the genre, she faces a completely different reality: training, rules, obligations, and an alliance of girl-wizards that resembles a working organization more than a secret order. The main threat here is also unusual — not a single opponent, but a climate crisis that requires not a beautiful gesture, but long and hard work. Against this backdrop, the heroine has to deal not only with new powers but also with anxiety, self-esteem, and the question of whether one can start life anew if the previous one has almost fallen apart.
