The affairs of the English planter David Sheldon, bearing the "burden of the white man" on the dreadful Solomon Islands, are not going well: his trading ship has sunk, the workers are suffering from dysentery, his business partner has died, and the recently planted coconut palms will only bear fruit in seven years. A pair of white traders offers to buy the plantation, but the amount they propose will only cover part of David's expenses. Salvation comes in the form of Joan Lackland, a young, enterprising, adventure-seeking American who has crashed off the coast of Guadalcanal. The progressive-thinking girl has plenty of unconventional ideas to save David's business.
