Published with the blessing of Emperor Nicholas I, "SLAVONIC-RUSSIAN ROOT DICTIONARY" by President of the Russian Academy Admiral Alexander Semyonovich SHISHKOV is an invaluable scientific work in the search and development of the "inexhaustible treasury of God's wisdom and the original language of our ancestors – the Slavs." "Root Dictionary..." is just a small part of A.S. Shishkov's literary heritage. But what a part it is! He dedicated almost his entire life to this work, digging day and night to reach the roots, the very essence of the ancestral words scattered across all languages, restoring from them the branches of words, engaging, according to his wife, in "patriotic nonsense." To conduct research of this kind, entire institutes are needed: he restored about six thousand verbal branches alone. Modern science, although it does not fully support Shishkov's views on Slavic languages, recognizes the monumentality of his work. Interestingly, all of his major discoveries in linguistics were made intuitively. Many of them later received scientific confirmation. The published work is of interest to scientific workers, historians, and philologists, as well as a wide range of readers who are not indifferent to the problems of Slavic studies.
