Perhaps we rarely understand the degree to which thinkers feel responsible for their statements. Carl Gustav Jung experimented on himself for many years—he conducted a tremendous amount of work within the psyche before formulating his groundbreaking theories. The "Black Books" are the working notes of these experiments. Subsequently, they took shape in the statement of the "Red Book", but even its prepared calligraphic volume did not become public knowledge during Jung's lifetime. Now, reading the "Black Books", we can peek into the authentic kitchen of his genius and appreciate the experiences that have given rise to such familiar concepts in our world as "archetypes", "self", "psyche", and "individuation".
