At the Edge of Sunset. Step Beyond the Fence

The novels by Yuri Slepushkin «At the Edge of Sunset» and «Step Beyond the Fence», which make up the «Argentinian duology», were begun in Argentina in Spanish but first saw the light in Russian, after the writer returned to his homeland.

At the core of the novel «At the Edge of Sunset» lies the personal drama of a talented artist, Gerard Buissonier, which unfolds against the backdrop of turbulent Latin American life. After failing to gain recognition in France, he emigrates to Argentina in search of «his audience», but encounters the same misunderstanding of his work and poverty. Desperate, Gerard decides to achieve at least financial independence and accepts an offer to create a series of questionable paintings, which leads him to realize his creative impotence. Even meeting the young Beatrice Alvarado, the girl of his dreams, cannot prevent the tragic outcome...

In the novel «Step Beyond the Fence», the story of Beatrice continues, her life after meeting Gerard filled with dramatic trials: temptations of passion, conflicts with family, doubts about the truth of the chosen path. Both novels are read in one breath and are imbued with romance and a deep love for life and people.
