When the guardians of the house tremble...

The theme of the colorful essays collected in this book is the flicker of good and evil, their deceptive similarity, their intermittent flow in the river of time. The title refers the reader to the verse from Ecclesiastes (12:3): “In the day when the guardians of the house tremble and the strong men bow down…” Ecclesiastes spoke of old age, when a person goes blind, becomes deaf, loses teeth, and bends under the burden of diseases and years. But we have the right to relate this to troubling times, when half-forgotten concepts of good and evil suddenly seize the consciousness and are filled with meaning.
