Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides, 1138–1204) — the greatest Jewish sage of the post-Talmudic era: legislator, philosopher, scholar, and physician. His code Mishneh Torah (“Repeated Teaching”) is one of the most important works of the Jewish tradition. In the most extensive of his works, Maimonides summarizes and systematizes the Talmudic tradition and presents the entirety of Jewish religious legislation — halakha — in an accessible form. The eleventh book of Maimonides' Mishneh Torah, Nezikin, meaning “Damages,” dedicated to criminal and civil law, includes: Laws on property damage, Laws on theft, Laws on robbery and loss, Laws on injury and causing harm, Laws on the murderer and preserving life. It is published in Russian for the first time in full, in an exact modern translation and with detailed commentary.
