This reissue of selected works by the outstanding Russian sinologist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences B.L. Riftiin (1932–2012) presents papers that reflect the main areas of the author's scientific interests as a sinologist, literary scholar, and folklorist.

The first volume includes works on mythology and folklore. These are works that present theoretical conclusions regarding the genre system, the mechanism of interaction between literature and folklore in Eastern countries, articles on Chinese mythology and folklore based on the oral folk creativity of the peoples of Central Asia, Siberia, and the Far East, which are important for understanding the general patterns of formation and development of folklore and written literature. Works on the history of domestic sinology and a list of the main scientific works of B.L. Riftiin conclude the volume.
