Dombey and Son

One of the saddest and psychologically profound novels of Dickens. A novel in which he ruthlessly unveils the soul of the early Victorian bourgeois, deprived of human feelings and obsessed with the thirst for profit. Such is Mr. Dombey, a rather respectable man who never breaks the rules of morality. So why does his respectability, his notions of duty, honor, and decency ruin the lives of all his loved ones – and even his own? Dickens does not provide a direct answer to this question; however, the story of Mr. Dombey's daughter Florence and her beloved Walter Gay, who comes from a simple working-class family, these true representatives of a new outlook on life, in which there is room not only for duty but also for feelings, instills hope for the future in the reader.
