The Wendigo = Вендиго

This is a collection about how the forest looks at a person — and how a person cannot withstand this gaze.

In "The Wendigo," a hunt in the Canadian wilderness turns into a nightmarish experience of encountering an ancient spirit of the forest that breaks the body and mind of one of the characters, along with the faith of the others in the familiar, rational world. In "The Willows," two travelers find themselves in a strange, almost unreal landscape where nature comes to life, and the whisper of the wind turns into a harbinger of something cosmically hostile. In "The Man Whom the Trees Loved," a quiet love for nature gradually transforms into an obsession and the slow dissolution of the human "self" in the will of the forest. "The Wendigo" is three variations on one unsettling theme: what happens to a person when civilization retreats, and true savagery—ancient, impersonal, indifferent—finally responds to their gaze.
