The Triumph of Home Slippers. On Renouncing the World. An Essay

Home today is not just a shelter, it is something more: a space that displaces and replaces the world, a cocoon that makes breaking out unnecessary. Almost everything can be delivered to our home. Why then go out and expose ourselves? Like Oblomov, who never managed to get off the sofa to meet life, will we become faded, listless beings?

The aim of this essay is to explore the mentality of renouncing an active life, to understand its philosophical roots and historical contours. Never before has the tension between the desire to wander and the taste for solitude been so strong. And forced confinement, the true nightmare of recent years (the pandemic period/era), seems to have transformed for many into voluntary self-isolation. We are threatened not by the tyranny of health but by the tyranny of a sedentary lifestyle: will slippers and a bathrobe become its new attributes?
