Notes on What Has Been Seen and Heard

Yevlaliya Pavlovna Kazanovich (1885–1942) was at the origins of the Pushkin House, where she was involved in cataloging materials since 1911, serving as a librarian, assistant curator of book collections, and later as a research associate. In her published diaries, covering the period from 1912 to 1923, Kazanovich pays much attention not only to the Pushkin House but also to the St. Petersburg Higher Women's (Bestuzhev) Courses, which she graduated from in 1913. She writes about the famous writers and literary scholars she had the chance to meet and communicate with (A. A. Blok, F. K. Sologub, N. A. Kotlyarevsky, I. A. Shlyapkin, B. L. Modzalyevsky, and many others) and the renowned artists A. E. Yakovlev and V. I. Shukhaev. Kazanovich could say about herself the words of her beloved Tyutchev: “Blessed is he who has visited this world in its fateful moments…”; the turning historical events are reflected in her diary entries in descriptions of everyday life, recorded by a careful observer.
