The fearless Frenchman voluntarily accompanied the disgraced royal family to Siberia and did his best to brighten the captivity of the tsar, the tsarina, and their children.

Gilliard passed on valuable information to posterity about the last days of the imperial family and left vivid psychological portraits of Rasputin, Yuriev, and many other well-known figures of this tragic era in the life of Russia.
