Greg Mortenson worked as a nurse, slept in his car, and kept his few belongings in a storage unit. In memory of his deceased sister, he decided to conquer the most difficult mountain, K2. This attempt almost cost him his life if not for the help of local residents. A few days spent in a Pakistan village cut off from civilization shook Greg so much that he decided to raise the necessary funds and return to Pakistan to build a school for the village children.
Today, Mortenson runs one of the most successful charitable organizations in the world, having built 145 schools and several dozen women's and medical centers in the poorest villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The book has been published in 48 countries and has become a bestseller in each of them. Greg Mortenson himself has been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize.
