The History of the Russian State

In 1803, N. M. Karamzin, by that time a well-known writer and journalist, was appointed historiographer by a decree of Alexander I. From that time until the end of his life, having left literary activities, Karamzin was engaged in writing his main work – «The History of the Russian State». He was the first to open domestic history to a wide range of readers.

This edition contains key chapters of this famous twelve-volume work, accompanied by detailed commentary prepared by scholar specialists. The book reproduces illustrations by masters of historical painting from the late 19th – early 20th centuries.
