Sandro from Chegem. Part One: Romantic

The cycle "Sandro from Chegem" was written by Fazil Iskander over thirty years. All stories in it unite two common characters: Uncle Sandro—a true folk hero, trickster, and rascal who finds a way out of any problematic situation and "does not forget about small personal pleasures amidst great public affairs," and a young journalist who records individual episodes from the life of his acquaintance.
The author masterfully uses language and has an astonishing sense of humor to tell stories that are not devoid of tragic moments, set against the backdrop of revolution, the Civil War, collectivization, and other historical events of the first half of the 20th century.
