A young knight, Huldbrand, lost in the forest, encounters the daughter of a fisherman – the young and beautiful Undine.

Falling in love with the beauty at first sight, he decides to take her to the altar, not yet knowing who she truly is… Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, while creating "Undine," drew inspiration from folklore works – German, French, Scandinavian. 

His tragic romantic tale was met with great enthusiasm immediately after its release.

It was translated into many European languages, and its plot subsequently became the basis for numerous operas and a dozen films, and it was precisely Fouqué's "Undine" that inspired H. C. Andersen to create "The Little Mermaid."
