This collectible edition continues the collection of works of the famous Soviet historian, academician Evgeny Viktorovich Tarle (1874—1955). A brilliant educator, he possessed an extraordinary literary talent for a scholar while remaining the most authoritative specialist in Russian historical science,...
wholly devoted to historical truth. His popularizing style, lively language, and narrative dynamism combined with a strict, pedantic adherence to facts place his works alongside those of the great N. M. Karamzin, V. O. Klyuchevsky, and N. I. Kostomarov.
The seventh volume of the collection opens with the first book of the two-volume work «Heroes of Russian History», which gathers studies dedicated to the glorious past of the Russian Navy in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The volume includes: «The Battle of Chesma and the First Russian Expedition to the Archipelago (1769—1774)», «Admiral Ushakov in the Mediterranean (1798—1800)», «Admiral Senyavin's Expedition in the Mediterranean (1805—1807)», and the study «The City of Russian Glory. Sevastopol in 1854—1855», dedicated to the Crimean War and the heroic defense of Sevastopol. These studies are based on careful examination of a large number of sources, many of which had not been published before E. V. Tarle. The historian draws on ship logs, materials from Admiral Spiridov's fund, documents from Admiral F. F. Ushakov's office concerning the command of the squadron in the Mediterranean, and many other archival materials, memoirs from participants in the events, official correspondence, and private letters.
