Fog Over the River

Doppo Kunikida was born in the early years of the Meiji era, and the thousand-year-old traditions turned to dust before his eyes. He believed that the main trouble of the new era was the loss of connection with nature and... the renunciation of one's essence, departing from the spiritual in favor of the material. Not all of the author's heroes managed to maintain dignity under the weight of the life circumstances they faced, but the writer believed that some individuals would succeed in overcoming the moral crisis that befell the nation.
