Late Youth

Like all his peers, the main character of the novel «Late Youth» was raised with the thought that it is the sacred duty of every Japanese to go to war and die for the emperor. But by the time the main character grew up, the war was over, Japan had lost, and the emperor renounced his divine status.

And now the generation that was late to die must learn to live with the feeling of shame from an unfulfilled duty to their homeland, to find their own way in a world where moral guidelines have blurred, and former ideals have faded into oblivion.

But how to avoid the complete collapse of hopes if indifference, irresponsibility, and nihilism rule the surroundings?
