In a new age of industry, guilds are in control, and their power depends on ether, a magical substance extracted from the earth.

Guildmaster Eliza Mainell holds the power in the Guild of Telegraphists with an iron hand, but cannot stop the disease that is destroying her own son, Ralph.

In desperation, she decides to resort to magic and journeys to Ainfell – a land untouched by ether, where all changelings of England have been exiled, all those who have been irrevocably altered by a new magical essence – where she asks for help. Her request is granted. Miraculously healed, Ralph decides to rid himself of his mother’s excessive control and live his own life.

But the despotic Eliza does not wish to let him go – though she still does not know that this seemingly very personal story will soon transform into something global and lead the entire country to a bloody war.
