Post-Impressionism

Post-Impressionism is a conventional collective name for the united directions in European painting at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The founders are commonly considered to be four artists who provided a unique summary of 19th-century art and set the vector for the development of subsequent generations of artists: Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. They moved away from the immediate sensory depiction of the surrounding world characteristic of the Impressionists and aimed to convey to the viewer a deeper, philosophical meaning of existence. Each of these masters, despite their conventional affiliation with Post-Impressionism, worked in an exceptional style unique to them and diligently searched for new paths in painting. Essentially, they were only united by their very complex and tragic fate. Overall, the work of the Post-Impressionists expressed the dominant motives and moods of their time and had a significant impact on the development of the artistic culture at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries.
