The late 1950s, Spain. Pathologist Quirk from Dublin, a man with a turbulent past and a perceptive but fierce mind, is resting at the idyllic resort of San Sebastián with his beautiful wife. A cantankerous homebody, Quirk is weary of... new experiences, but one evening during dinner at a café, he notices a familiar face and realizes he has encountered a person who should not be alive. He is overwhelmed by an incredible interest in a new case that could bring down an entire dynasty of Irish politicians.
