Through the Dull Glass

In the next volume of the collected works of Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, the legendary cycle of stories about the supernatural detective Martin Hesselius is presented, among which is the cult classic "Carmilla." Le Fanu was a master of suspense and psychological experimentation ahead of his time. This writer understood that behind any crime, including those that summon dark forces, one must seek the "dark root," the unnoticed moral decline in the biographies of the suspects. Martin Hesselius, the first "occult detective" in world literature, transforms the investigation into a puppet theater, within which all characters will eventually have to bare their souls. "The romantic gothic tradition flourished in the 19th century thanks to authors such as Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Wilkie Collins, Sir Henry Ryder Haggard, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Herbert Wells, and Robert Louis Stevenson..." Howard Lovecraft
