«Sensational news!» — the newspapers reported about A. P. Chekhov's journey to Sakhalin in 1890: the famous young writer unexpectedly even for his relatives went to the distant penal island.
The trip took eight months, the writer traveled many thousands of versts by train and by steamboats, horses, and boats, and several times he barely escaped death. But, contrary to readers' expectations, Chekhov brought back from Sakhalin not a novel, but the book «Sakhalin Island». This book is at the same time a travel essay and a comprehensive study of the unique history of the island and the fates of its inhabitants — the indigenous population and the exiled convicts.
