The tradition of reading the Gospel by readings was established in the Orthodox Church by the 5th century. A reading (in Greek - excerpt) is a few verses that represent a completed meaningful fragment of text. Thus, in the Gospel... of Matthew there are 116 readings, in Mark - 71 readings, in Luke - 114, in John - 76. The reading of the readings during the service is distributed in such a way that throughout the church year all four Gospels are read in the church. Following the liturgical cycle, one can read daily the Gospel reading indicated for that day in the church calendar.
