Two people come to a house they have never been to before, meet the owner who has somehow turned into a ghost, and decide that their visit is ill-timed and it would be wiser to leave. But deciding is easy,... and doing is hard. Throughout the novel, they wander through the enormous house, which, as if breaking free after the owner's death, greets them with swarms of forks wandering through the corridors, a fountain shooting out of an aquarium, and other things that are pleasant to describe but not so pleasant to experience. One of the two, recalling this unprecedented adventure, seems to dislike his story very much and does everything possible to evade its direct line: a flood of anecdotes drowning his speech makes the reader feel what it's like to walk a path where something continuously hinders you.
