Isaak Emmanuilovich Babel (1894–1940) — Russian writer, translator, screenwriter, and war correspondent.

Master of the short story, he was able to view life through the lens of irony and wit.

During the Civil War, the writer was part of the First Cavalry Army of Budyonny, and the complex events of those years found reflection in the pages of his cycle.
