Vincent Van Gogh is a truly legendary figure. No personal life has been studied so comprehensively that it even served as the basis for monographs and novels, and the relationship with his brother Theo became the foundation for a well-known film. Medical professionals still argue about what exactly Van Gogh was suffering from and how it affected his creativity. Artists from different movements and styles fight for the right to claim Van Gogh as their teacher and guru, while he, a self-taught artist, was not representative of any known school. Thanks to numerous books, such as 'The Life of Van Gogh' by Henri Perruchot or 'Lust for Life' by Irving Stone, some facts of his biography, such as the story of the severed ear, have turned into peculiar legends. It seems that we should know everything about him. Yet new facts keep emerging, new testimonies come to light that refute previous theories... and we realize that he will forever remain an eternal mystery in our minds. We can argue and talk endlessly, constantly asking the question: 'Why do we want to know more about him again and again? What touches us so deeply about this nervous and anxious painting, these sunny colors, these sometimes otherworldly subjects?'
