Pierre Gilliard was the tutor of Tsarevich Alexei, the son of Nicholas II. The fearless Frenchman voluntarily went with the disgraced royal family to Siberia and tried in any way he could to alleviate the captivity of the tsar, the tsarina, and their children. Gilliard passed on to descendants precious information about the last days of the imperial family and left vivid psychological portraits of Rasputin, Vyrubova, and many other well-known figures from this tragic era in Russia's history.
