Summer of 1945. The war is over, but in the Baltics, fascist remnants calling themselves "forest brothers" continue to operate. Bandits are robbing the civilian population, attacking soldiers, killing police and representatives of Soviet authority. One of the gangs is led by former policeman Vitas Varnas. SMERSH officers – Major Nikolai Konovalov and Captain Vasily Ryabtsev – are sent to search for him. According to legend, they are recent German lackeys trying to escape justice abroad.
