Subsequent... work on the piece lasted about ten years and required enormous dedication and hard work from the writer. In her striving to penetrate the very spirit of the era, Mitchell meticulously studied the history of her native Atlanta, using newspapers and magazines from the mid-19th century. On the pages of her manuscript, the accounts of eyewitnesses of the Civil War and family legends came to life. Some scenes were rewritten by Mitchell four or five times, and as for the first chapter, the writer was satisfied only with the 60th version! The novel, published in the spring of 1936, was a resounding success, breaking all records for popularity and circulation in the entire history of American literature. The film adaptation, starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, won 10 Academy Awards and became one of the most famous films in the history of world cinema.
