Mahabharata

«Mahabharata» («The Tale of the Great Battle of the Descendants of Bharata») – the greatest monument of ancient Indian heroic epic. Indian tradition holds that «Mahabharata» is a single work, created by the sage Vyasa, who is revered as the compiler of the Vedas and Puranas. The Mahabharata contains about 100,000 shlokas (couplets), exceeding in volume the «Odyssey» and «Iliad» combined. A full translation of the ancient Indian epic into Russian is a matter of the distant future. This popular summary of the great Indian epic cycle «Mahabharata» in Russian has been prepared by scholars-indologists V. Erman and E. Temkin.
