In April 1579, the famous pirate, Captain Francis Drake of the "Golden Hind," boarded the Spanish galleon "Cacafuego." In addition to the rich loot, the pirates took a dark-skinned slave woman named Makaya from the ship. Who is she to the English — a prisoner or a guest? It depends on whether she can find common ground with Captain Drake, whom the crew calls "the General." He is the only one here who makes decisions. Life on board the ship is harsh and full of deprivations, and the young woman also has to defend herself daily against arbitrariness and violence.
