Calligraphy - the art of beautiful writing - came into the world from Ancient China and Japan. And today in these countries, calligraphy is very popular. In Russia, unfortunately, this art is in decline. Among people who are far from the knowledge of psychology, physiology, and pedagogy, there have been discussions about completely stopping teaching children to write.
"What is it needed for? Everything necessary can be typed on a computer or smartphone!" But here’s why. Calligraphy wonderfully develops the fine motor skills of the hands. The connection between fine motor skills and brain development was noticed by people many centuries ago. Many scientists and educators studied this connection seriously in the 14th-20th centuries.
Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, noted that if there are problems with a child's speech, fine motor skills are most likely to blame.
Montessori believed that the better developed a child's fingers are, the sooner the child begins to speak. Vladimir Mikhailovich Bekhterev, an outstanding Russian psychiatrist, neurologist, physiologist, and psychologist, was convinced that hand movements have always been closely related to speech and contributed to its development.
The wonderful educator Vasily Alexandrovich Sukhomlinsky wrote: "The roots of children's abilities and talents are at the tips of their fingers.
From the fingers, so to speak, the finest streams flow, which nourish the source of creative thought. In other words: the more skillful the child’s hand, the smarter the child."
And it is already well known today that fine motor skills, and thus calligraphy, play an important role in the development of attention, memory, thinking, speech, and spatial orientation.
